Management training for staff is the most poorly resourced area of staff development within the charitable sector. Often staff are appointed to a management role with little or no training and are expected to lead their team effectively through the trials and tribulations of the not-for-profit sector. This interactive DVD encapsulates one of Empower’s most popular courses and is a must for current managers and those wishing to move into a management role. Packed full of advice and strategies, including a role play exercise on Effective Supervision, this is an extremely worthwhile investment for any organisation.
Designed for Community Development Workers, Outreach Workers and Volunteers the course explores how to engage with communities who appear not to want to get involved. How to say “No” and avoid burn out and what to do if things go wrong. We revisit Belbins’ ‘Forming’, ‘Storming’, ‘Norming’ and ‘Performing’ and show you how to lead groups through these stages. Finally we look at the levels of participation and how to identify true community activity from pure tokenism.

"Although I missed the humour in Bev’s ‘in person’ training, but this can’t come across in the same way on a DVD as it does in a room full of people. Very comprehensive course, covered everything I could think of! I will learn a great deal from having this DVD to refer to when I need to." - Esther Nagle: Penrhys Partnership
As the model of delivery focuses on taking services to the service user the risks to staff and organisations increase. This straight forward CD advises lone workers and employers about their responsibilities and provides steps to keep staff safe.
The course includes managing project costs, creating milestones and understanding and evidencing project targets. Easy to understand, it takes you through all the important steps and shows you how to avoid the pitfalls.

"I liked the language and tone of the presentation, like being on a real training course! The language used is clear, precise, without too much jargon and so is very accessible to new managers as well as well experienced ones. Would certainly be beneficial to a cash strapped organisation with numerous line managers to train." - Esther Nagle: Penrhys Partnership
Empower has delivered this extremely valuable training to well over 1,000 people and it continues to be a very popular course. You can access this training again and again to train staff and volunteers as and when you need it with this Interactive DVD and toolkit.

"Overall, how satisfied were you with this DVD? A: Very. I was able to select the particular chapters I was interested in watching, and re watch chapters I needed to go back to. I will learn a great deal from having this DVD to refer to when I need to. I would consider the price to be very reasonable for the value of the content. Very comprehensive course, covered everything I could think of!" - Esther Nagle: Penrhys Partnership
I finished the last blog with a quote and have started this one with another. The ‘title’ of this piece is a quote from the film 13th Warrior, described by Time Out in the following terms: “At its best, this achieves the beauty and grandeur of a Kurosawa epic - at its worst, however, it feels like a Python remake of The Vikings.”

Accountants within charities are important ... well I would say that wouldn’t I! But realistically they have to be important. I have heard service departments of charities grumbling that “finance rules this organisation” and whilst finance shouldn’t rule they should certainly have a hand in ruling.
